Japan tips
●
Time zone: Japan Standard Time (UTC+9), 14 hours ahead of Chicago (CDT) in April. No daylight saving.
●
Get an IC card. A Suica or ICOCA card in your phone's wallet pays for local trains, buses, and convenience stores. Your guide handles all tour rail tickets.
●
Carry some cash (yen). Cards work widely, but temples, market stalls, and small shops are often cash only. 7-Eleven ATMs take foreign cards.
●
No tipping. It isn't expected anywhere in Japan and can cause confusion. Great service is simply included.
●
Shoes off indoors at the ryokan, many temples, and some restaurants. Wear socks you're happy to show.
●
Pack light for Hakone. Your main suitcase is forwarded straight to Kyoto on Apr 8. Bring a small overnight bag for the ryokan night.
●
Cherry blossom season. Early April is peak bloom and peak crowds. Your guide times the popular sites for early mornings.
